Psychiatric and neurologic conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, autism, bipolar disorder, and dementia have been associated with genius or prophetic insight since antiquity.

In the fourth century B.C.E., Aristotle claimed “that all men who have attained excellence in philosophy, in poetry, in art and politics [...] had a melancholic habitus; indeed some suffered even from melancholic disease.” Plato wrote of a species of “madness which is a divine gift, and the source of the chiefest blessings granted to men.” 2,400 years later, the correlation persists. Is it a misguided romantic notion or does new research suggest it is true? And how does our increasing awareness of biological and psychological diversity complicate assumptions about innate gifts and afflictions?

BAASICS.3: The Deep End brings together a diverse group of artists and scientists to consider these questions and others. 

Join artist and Creativity Explored Visual Arts Instructor Leeza Doreian as she presents a survey of artworks by CE artists and speak about the organization’s mission to provide artists with developmental disabilities multople opportunities to create artwork and pursue careers in the visual arts.

Doreian wil be joined by Dr. Walter Freeman who will consider how chaos in the brain may endow us with the ability to respond flexibly to the outside world and to generate novel ideas. In addition, photographer Timothy Archibald and his son, Eli, will share their experience collaborating with one another on a collection of compelling images that sheds light on the autistic experience.

An imaginative exhibition of installations that explore the concept of space.

Featured Creativity Explored artists include: Hanh Chau, Allura Fong, Christina Marie Fong, Anthony “Tony” Gomez, Claus Groeger, Jay Herndon, Makeya Kaiser, Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra, Marilyn Wong, and Beth Zmerzlikar.

SPACE is an immersive gallery experience consisting of sculpture-based work made from repurposed materials, paired with sound, video, and light components. More than a dozen Creativity Explored artists worked collaboratively to create a space of their own, working alongside the exhibition’s curators to create an “out-of-the frame,” conceptual environment.

Artist Anthony “Tony” Gomez, who has been with Creativity Explored nearly since its inception 30 years ago, is showing his piece “Different Colors,” a sculpture made of hand-sewn and painted paper. A year ago Gomez began the work as modest wall piece, but it has since grown to a large structure that measures more than six feet in height. This large-scale piece is displayed with a projection of a 16-millimeter scratch film through its mass, allowing light to bleed through and also giving the sculpture the appearance of movement.

Another artist, Makeya Kaiser, uses recycled cardboard and shredded paper to create abstract forms that resemble concrete blocks dotted with tiny, confetti-like speckles of color. Artist Marilyn Wong utilizes digital drawings as large-scale wall projections, while Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra pairs several of her white plaster and yarn sculptures with abstract animation film.

“This is a significant show for Creativity Explored, as it is the first exhibit that will focus solely on sculptural and conceptual work with aspects of digital media,” says Creativity Explored Visual Arts Instructor Grace Rosario Perkins, co-curator with Miranda Putman of SPACE. “The environment is intended to put you into the minds of the artists to see and feel their perspective,” she adds.
